It’s the new year, which means new news. Not all of it good. This week saw the bombing of an NAACP office in the States, and the shooting of several journalists and two police officers in Paris. Also, Russia. Wow, Russia. Also also, some guys rocked out with some Slayer on instruments built for pre-schoolers. Get through the first bit, and you get that. Promise. I’ll stagger them so nobody gets tired.

Happily, nobody died. Or was even injured. But the FBI says it was deliberate, and they have a vague suspect description. The biggest news surrounding it was how little news there was until the topic started trending on Twitter. Much like Ferguson. Welp, new year.

Paris humour magazine Charlie Hebdo was the subject of a violent attack this week, spelling tragedy and a global reaction. It’s the essential conflict of swords and pens, they say. Here’s to hoping this doesn’t usher in another era where Muslims have to continually justify their position as moderates.

Russia makes it illegal for trans people to drive cars
Yep. New regulations around driving in Russia declare being trans a sexual disorder, and bar trans people from driving. It’s already being condemned by human rights commissions, which has always worked on Russia in the past. In other news, the World Health Organization also considers being trans a mental disorder (but they’re at least in the process of changing it. Because it’s bullshit).
