Woot Suit Riot

In the spirit of talking about starting new things, I’m going to talk about a new thing that I’m starting. I’ve been making a lot of videos, trying to keep up my two per week pace, and Dan and I will be making videos come July. As well, Ryan and I over at TPK will be putting together some short videos about gaming. I have a Youtube channel, but it belongs to me. If we’re going to really collaborate we need a space that belongs to us. So I teamed up with Kayleigh, a good friend and incredible person, to create Woot Suit Riot.

A long time ago, I wrote about my boots. Whenever I put them on, I just feel good. I feel ready to take on anything. They’re part of my Woot Suit, which isn’t so much about wearing things to be happy as it is about wearing things that make you yourself. That’s what the Woot Suit Riot is all about. Being ourselves and celebrating the things that we love, including neat ideas, creativity, science, technology, games, charity, adventure, the list goes on. It’s going to feature vlogs, music, livestreamed D&D, and hopefully the fabled D&D for charity project that’s due to happen next year.

For us, it’s also a great foray into something we’ve never done before. It’s interesting and scary and neat. I’ve done a bunch of research, but there’s only so much  you can learn about something before before doing it. Our goals are modest, we want to make some things, encourage creativity (our own and hopefully other people’s), and make some people smile. And every meeting we have also involves a jam session, which is awesome.

The first thing I’ve learned while setting this up is to never do anything alone. There are so many brilliant people around that there’s no way I can’t benefit from putting heads together. We can keep each other inspired, keep each other accountable, and if need be keep each other in check. It’s great to have another set of eyes on your work and another pair of hands to hold the camera.

The other thing I’ve been reminded of is how tricky it can be to start something from scratch. As much as I just want to sit around and play music and make videos, I feel that there needs to be some kind of method to this madness. I’m still learning what that is. Normally when I make a video I just ask for a song idea, sit down, and do it. Now there’s coordination and responsibility, which is awesome because the results are worlds better.

I have to go and have that meeting and jam session soon, so I need to go. All the feelings that I talked about in my Starting Things post apply. But it’s gonna be great. It’s time to do a thing.
