According to the BBC, in a recent experiment the National Ignition Facility managed to produce an excess of energy to what they were consuming in a fusion reaction. From the article, “… the latest achievement has been described as the single most meaningful step for fusion in recent years, and demonstrates NIF is well on its way towards the coveted target of ignition and self-sustaining fusion.”

According to the lead author of the paper, Kevin Healy, “The ability to perceive time on very small scales may be the difference between life and death for fast-moving organisms such as predators and their prey.”
