Hexup for Nov 23

The hexup’s pretty quick this week, because I’m getting ready for the G33K Art Show! I’ll be playing there from 6:30-8:00 tonight, and again at 4:30-6:00 tomorrow, so come on down, make me sing in a funny voice, buy some art, and have a good time. In the meantime, six wicked things.

You had me at “Cosmic neutrino muppets”

Neutrinos are subatomic particles that we’re still learning about and discovering different varieties of. That I knew. What I didn’t know is that they tend to get named after characters from Sesame Street, a fact which vastly improves my life. The IceCube neutrino observatory has been set up to observe neutrinos in deeper space, and just published a paper with 26 new neutrino candidates, one of which is Snufflupagus.

Ordered amazement

Twenty incredible sculptures from artist Peter Callesen, each cut from a single piece of paper. I can barely make an airplane, let alone something beautiful, spooky, or moving. Seriously, look at this.

Fear of pain

It turns out, according to research from University College London, that the fear of pain is often worse and more frequent than pain itself. From the New Scientist article, “By varying the number of shocks and when they occurred, the team was able to figure out that the dread of pain increased exponentially as pain approached in time.” This certainly tracks with my experience, how about yours?

More order

Nature.com suggests twenty tips for interpreting scientific claims, designed to be helpful both for politicians who have to deal with science funding and legislation, and the general public to hopefully make us better acquainted with how science actually works.

Science and cookies.

Let me say that again. Science. And cookies. This TED talk is the best of two pretty spiffy worlds.

The GZA drops some science

Because it’s awesome. Except the video appears to have been taken down. Sad face. So here’s some teens rapping about calculus (which is also awesome).
