Hexup for Jan 24 – Correlations, Power Rangers, and Getting Things Done

Today’s grab bag is basically a collection of cool and neat and touching and lovely things we found on the internet this week. From comics that make things clear to the tales of heroes, to sad AI and my total crush on Hank Green.

Red, White and Beard

A while back we talked about Vishavjit Singh, the Sikh Captain America, and how rad he is. The software engineer and cartoonist now also visits schools and universities talking about Sikh social identity, and what life is like as a Sikh in the United States. So he went to New York and made a movie talking to people on the street. The interviews range from their thoughts on Captain America, American image, to how it relates to culture and whiteness.

Misantry

Punchline stolen shamelessly from Robot Hugs. They’ve got a great post this week that nails conversation and privilege.

Mario is sad

A group of researchers at the University of Tübingen have designed algorithms that give Mario some personality. He can learn, speak, express feelings about things, and gather information from his environment. The video of this Mario project is part of the AAAI Video Competition, and you can vote for it by watching it and liking it on Youtube.

Rangers reunited?

Two people stood together. One of them wore a particular costume. It kind of blew Huck’s mind. Does this reunion of Johnny Yong Bosch and Jason David Frank mean the return of the Power Rangers? Or were they in our hearts all along?

Lining up

Correlation is not causation, but it can be hilarious. Did you know that the total revenue of arcades in the United States correlates almost 1:1 (0.98909) with the number of lawyers in Wyoming? For a huge collection of amusing but meaningless correlations, you can visit Tyler Vigen’s Spurious Correlation Generator. Amaze your friends! Confound your enemies?

Getting things done

It’s no secret that I have a crush on Hank Green. I want to ride bikes with him and for him to come to my birthday party. On How to Adult this week, he gave some tips on how to do all the things, for those of us who want to do all the things. Also he interviewed the President of the United States this week. That happened.
