Hexup for Feb 8

Lots of news this week, from a bit of gaming fun to laser leatherworking video, with some infuriating debate thrown in for good measure.

Invasion of the killer robots

The White House just announced its first Maker Faire. This is pretty awesome, though ti’ll also be their downfall. Trying to check the best things the best makers can bring through security will invariably result in someone’s robot running amok and seizing the presidency. You heard it here first, people.

Like my eyes? I made them

“A group of researchers from the UK have used 3-D biomedical printing to successfully print new eye cells, making it the first time the technology has been used successfully to print mature central nervous system cells. The breakthrough could lead to the production of artificial tissue grafts made from the variety of cells found in the human retina and may aid in the search to cure blindness.” Read the full story at imaginethat-3d.

The Battle of Bill

Bill Nye, famed science guy, debated creationist Ken Ham this week on the topic of whether Ham’s account of literalist creationism is compatible with reality, to the expected non-result. It’s worth a watch to hear Bill explain awesome science things in patient and calm tones to an utterly infuriating person. Well done sir, and hopefully some people heard some things and will go read some books. No Ken, there are other books.

40 and counting

I wrote my own D&D 40th anniversary post on TPK on Monday, but over at Boingboing.net, Ethan Gilsdorf, author of Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks wrote a great article about why D&D is still relevant after 40 years. “We need D&D and role-playing more than ever. If for no other reason than to help us take back our creativity, our storytelling mojo, from the things that take them from us: Hollywood, publishing, even social media.”

Better Superheroes by Alex Law

Art by Alex Law

Little girls are better than you

When it comes to designing superheroes, among other things. Artist Alex Law has been illustrating superheroes based on the costumes of little girls, and they’re pretty rad. Also highly practical for the most part. Publishers take note, these are the heroes these kids want to be.

DIY

Ryan Consell, a good friend of mine and brilliant artist, makes plague doctor masks. Creepy ones with flames on them. See him for all your punk rock mask needs.
